Bad Human Factors Designs

In a (vaguely) similar vein to Donald Norman’s excellent book The Design of Everyday Things, comes a site called Bad Human Factors Designs, “a scrapbook of illustrated examples of things that are hard to use because they do not follow human factors principles.” Some rather amusing examples.

Making new friends, South London style

Cooked a nice, hot — if not particularly authentic — jambalaya on Saturday night. Naturally we drank a gallon of red wine with it, and were still up at 5am knocking back the Merlot. The ‘Big Easy’ theme continued into Sunday, as I didn’t wake up until mid-afternoon. L and I decided to head over [...]

It’s here at last! Windows XP day has finally arrived! The world will now be a better place — our work will be easier and more profitable, leaving us free to enjoy our happier and more creative leisure time! At the press of a button, we’ll be able to fly, clutching video clips of our [...]

Typography matters

Just been reading a couple of interesting articles over at A List Apart — Typography Matters and the wittily-titled The trouble with Em ‘n En and other shady characters, and the related discussions on the forum.

Do you know what a Dirty Sanchez is?

If you’ve got AOL Instant Messaging you have to get over to Icon Sex. In fact, have a look even if you haven’t got AIM. Lots of very funny, well-animated icons of people having ‘adult fun’.

At last, some good news

Seems the IRA have started destroying their weapons — finally something to be happy about after weeks of depressing news. See: violence pointless, discussion successful. Plus, shock, horror — politician applies common sense — Home Secretary David Blunkett has announced that he wants to reclassify cannabis, so that possession of it will no longer be [...]

US Patent madness

IBM has been awarded US Patent #6,304,886 for:
[A software] tool comprises a plurality of pre-stored templates, comprising HTML formatting code, text, fields and formulas…. Based on the identified templates and supplied data, the tool generates the customized Web site without the web site creator writing any HTML or other programming code.”

This was filed in June [...]

Plague

Watched a rather good TV programme on Channel 4 this evening — all about the Great Plague that killed a third of London in 1665. It focused on one particular street, and used parish records to build a picture of the characters and events, with reconstructions and computer generated images to really evoke the squalor [...]

Hot and bothered

Apparently 20,000 people gathered in London on Saturday to protest against the US and British military attacks on Afghanistan. Had I known about the demo, it would have been 20,001.
Does Dubya actually realise just how stupid he sounds casually dismissing the Taliban’s offer to hand over /bin/Laden, then turning and saying “Come on Barney!” to [...]

Et tu, Bert?

Just when I thought the world couldn’t get any more insane, photographic evidence has emerged proving that Sesame Street’s Bert is involved with Osama/bin/Laden. You couldn’t make this up if you tried.

Photos of an anti-US rally in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Monday, Oct. 8 show demonstrators holding up posters of Osama/bin/Laden. Within the poster, on the [...]

Amusing Rent is Due search engine listing

Just checking the stats for Troy: Rent is Due, and discovered someone arrived at the site having searched www.lycos.co.uk for “rent broadway soundtrack”! Hmmm, suspect it wasn’t quite what they were after… Ran the search myself and it’s actually the top listing for that query!
