Plague
Watched a rather good TV programme on Channel 4 this evening — all about the Great Plague that killed a third of London in 1665. It focused on one particular street, and used parish records to build a picture of the characters and events, with reconstructions and computer generated images to really evoke the squalor and horror. And there was certainly plenty of squalor and horror — they even re-enacted 17th century medical practice of giving a mercury enema! Probably good for the soul, if not for the body…
