Cool toys from uncool companies
Compaq and Microsoft aren’t two names that normally inspire a great deal of confidence when it comes to consumer products, but having spent most of Friday tinkering with an iPAQ PDA running MS PocketPC, I am pained to admit I was impressed. Setting it up to synch with a desktop PC via USB (although a Firewire option would be cool) was completely painless, and the hardware and OS/applications were very easy to use. Sadly the iPAQ wasn’t mine (I was doing a favour for a client, but took the opportunity to take it for a ‘test drive’), but I’m now looking for an excuse to treat myself — clear colour display, 64Mb RAM, built-in MP3 player, audio recording, infra-red etc… and Solitaire!
