The Free Republic of Meles

I’ve just discovered Nation States, a fun little online simulation where you get to create your own country, based on the answers you give to a few questions. You then get one or two issues to deal with every day, and how you act decides the state of your nation. You can also choose to join other groups of nations, interact with them, and even participate in the UN. So here’s my utopia: The Free Republic of Meles.

Motto: “Freedom through sillyness”
UN Category: Scandinavian Liberal Paradise
Civil Rights: Superb
Economy: Fragile
Political Freedoms: Excellent

The Free Republic of Meles is a tiny, socially progressive nation, notable for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level social equality free of the usual accompanying government corruption.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Crime is well under control. Meles’s national animal is the badger, which frolics freely in the nation’s many lush forests, and its currency is the pebble.

(someone already had Badgeria, damn them, so I opted for The Free Republic of Meles — Meles Meles being the latin for European Badger)
