It was all just a bad dream…

Interestingly, after the US’ admission that they’re holding children at Camp X-Ray, it seems that among the dictatorships Bush identified as the ‘axis of evil’TM, the US was the only country known to have executed juvenile offenders. Now clearly the old Iraqi regime had a dreadful human rights record, but reading about the US’s treatment of its juvenile criminals does bring to mind that ‘judge not lest ye be judged’ bit of the Bible.

Mind you, now we’ve ‘won’ (or have we?) one could be forgiven for thinking that the war on Iraq was just a bad dream, given the amount of coverage it’s got on the TV news over the last few days—it’s almost be relegated to just before the “And finally, a snowboarding duck…” spot. And who can blame them? Covering wars is a very expensive business, so most media outlets seem to be bringing their staff home—and some reporters have even brought a few ’souvenirs’ back with them. Naturally, with our short attention-spans, we viewers are probably suffering from ‘Iraq fatigue’ by now—time for a fresh sexy scarey monster-story now: Sars. Not to mention the fact that TV and newspaper advertisers don’t like seeing their adverts for microwave ovens next to stories about kids dying from disease in Iraq.

The Independent’s coverage of the war has been very good, so it’s sad to see that they’re now charging visitors to read some articles online, including Robert Fisk (£1 for 24 hours)—guess I won’t be adding any more links to them then. Still, you can read the Indy’s Robert Fisk’s reflections on the war elsewhere.

Last week, Tim Robbins gave an excellent speech to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.. Being one of Hollywood’s most vocal critics of the war on Iraq, I thought this was a pretty funny way to open his speech:

Thank you. And thanks for the invitation. I had originally been asked here to talk about the war and our current political situation, but I have instead chosen to hijack this opportunity and talk about baseball and show business. Just kidding. Sort of.
