Troy’s birthday weekend

On Friday evening I went over to see an old friend who’s recently moved to Clapham. Had about a year’s worth of catching up to do, which we did over a bottle of plonk at his new house, and continued doing over several pints up at the Common. We then headed back to his place to consume more wine and play computer games. He’s got a spankingly fast new PC, which he’s actually got set up in the kitchen — the house is pretty much centred around the trendy kitchen (he’s an architect and likes to cook), so this makes for incredibly civilised game playing!

I’m not entirely sure what time I got home, but god did I have an evil hangover when I got up the next day. Which was unfortunate as it was Troy’s birthday, and I still felt rough by the time I met up with everyone at 6.30. First stop was Shish, a kebab restaurant on Old Street. Yeah, I know, a kebab restaurant… what next, a chips and curry sauce restaurant? But in fact it was a nice place, with a variety of different kebabs, ranging from Mediterranean to Asian, and meat to fish and vegetarian (not to mention the strawberry beer).

After the meal we pottered downstairs to the basement bar, which was particularly impressive — cosy and richly decorated with a vaguely easten feel, it’d be the sort of place you could go for an intimate date. Or, like us, go to as a large group and get mashed up on cocktails (Badger particularly recommends the Apple Mojito).

The seven of us then moved on to one of the DJ bars in Hoxton Square, where Troy — by now free of the social restraints of sobriety — attempted to prove his theory on the part scent plays in compatibility by sniffing strangers’ armpits (with their bemused consent)! We all watched in a mixture of horror and amusement, but to be fair, as chat up lines go, it certainly seemed like a pretty good ice-breaker.

Next we popped along the road to Bluu which had just closed for the night, but we got into thanks to one of our party having worked there. We stayed drinking there for about an hour (whose idea were the flaming Sambucas?), and met some very nice people whose names I can’t remember for the life of me, including one girl who like me remembered when it was the Blue Note club (we agreed this made us feel old).

Once the staff had finished, we all left Bluu and popped round to a small club round the corner. Can’t remember much more really, so look forward to seeing the photos from Troy’s camera (Troy with the two very large girls, Troy passed out on bar etc.). Top weekend.
