I am a Flying Spaghetti Monsterist
This really the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time…
Last week the Kansas Board of Education gave preliminary approval to science standards that allow “Intelligent Design” (a.k.a. Creationism masquerading as science) to be taught alongside Darwinism. President Bush is a fan of the idea too: You’re asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas and the answer is ‘Yes’.
Bobby Henderson also thinks alternative theories should be discussed in schools along side evolution. More specifically, he’s written to the Kansas School Board demanding that they also teach his Intelligent Design theory:
Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.
…
Some find that hard to believe, so it may be helpful to tell you a little more about our beliefs. We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it. We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power.
He goes on to explain some of the other Flying Spaghetti Monsterism beliefs:
You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.
I sincerely recommend visiting the Flying Spaghetti Monsterism site so you too can be forever touched by His Noodly Appendage, and also the looking at the Wikipedia entry on the One True Monster, which features, among other things, the FSM’s Prayer.
Edit, 24th August: Thanks to some rather conservative editors, the Wikipedia entry is no longer as comprehensive as it was. I now recommend visiting Uncyclopedia for the FSM’s Prayer etc.. Meanwhile, on the new FSM forums there is talk of FSM Relics appearing on ebay.
For anyone who’s not entirely up to date on the Intelligent Design vs. Evolution argument then try Science of Discworld 3 - Darwin’s Watch. Well explained principles in an easy to understand format.
It starts with a great quote from a man ringing into a Southern Bible Belt radio station asking if “Darwin was so clever then why didn’t he get a Nobel Prize?” - Er, maybe its because he died before the first Nobel Prize was awarded….
