London Open House - day one

Because of a fairly last minute change of plans, rather than enjoying a few days in the country, J and I found ourselves in the capital for the annual Open House London weekend a week ago. We didn’t really have time to formulate much of a plan, let alone book to see some of the [...]

Return to Leake Street

I first popped along to see the graffiti and stencil art in Leake Street back in July; those pieces have now been removed, and replaced with some new works. As I had to be at Waterloo station for 8 o’clock on Thursday morning, I decided to check out the new work (sans tripod, but [...]

The Horniman Museum

The Horniman Museum is another of south London’s little-known gems, and arguably contains the most eclectic collections in all of London’s museums.

2012 Handover Party - spectacular isn’t the word

I’d be the first to admit that I am terribly cynical about the Olympics in general, and in particular about London 2012. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing but admiration for the athletes’ achievements, but for me they are totally overshadowed by the corruption, the tacky commercialisation, the political opportunism and the outrageous amounts [...]

The John McCain age factor

Hardly a TV news item on the US election seems to go by without at least one reporter or pundit trotting out a line like “As the race for the Whitehouse hots up, the Internet is increasingly becoming the main political battleground….”
The political parties on both sides of the Atlantic do seem to have woken [...]

Trippy news items

There was a very interesting piece in today’s Guardian about new clinical trials in which hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms) are being used to treat patients with a variety of conditions. These include headaches, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, and even helping patients come to terms with terminal illnesses.

Battersea Power Station open day

It seems as though someone proposes a new harebrained scheme an ambitious new regeneration project for Battersea Power Station every few years. The latest plans for the redevelopment of the power station are still at the pre-planning application stage, but this month the site is open to the public as part of the promotion/consultation for [...]

RIP Isaac Hayes

Let’s not dwell on the Scientology aspect. He made some fantastic music, worked to improve literacy, and brought us Chef’s Chocolate Salty Balls. RIP Isaac. It just doesn’t get much cooler than this:

More videos

Just in case you’re one of the five people that haven’t yet seen Simon Tofield’s fantastic Simon’s Cat animations, here’s my favourite:

Patrick didn’t think the previous Star Wars video was ‘darkside’ enough, and suggested this instead:

Birthday and Spinning Cats

I’ve had a really, really fun couple of weeks, but that has meant I’ve not really had time to post here. It was my birthday last week, and it turned out to be the happiest birthday I’ve had in years (and not just because of the yummy choccy cake pictured above). I had some really [...]

New Radiohead video

The video for Radiohead’s House of Cards is rather beautiful, not to mention very clever.
In Radiohead’s new video for “House of Cards”, no cameras or lights were used. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. The video was created entirely with visualizations of that data.

The ‘making of’ video [...]

A stroll down Leake Street

It’s not often I’m in central London early on a Sunday morning, but this today I found myself heading home at 8 o’clock. The weather was beautiful, and as I had my camera with me, I decided to take a detour to Leake Street, behind Waterloo station. I missed the Cans Festival which took place [...]
