Six photography links

Balakov\'s recreation of Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare Balakov\'s Lego recreation of Tennis Girl

Six interesting photography sites for you today. The first one, Balakov’s classic photographs recreated in lego, has been doing the rounds for a while now, but I see he’s added more recently. My favourites are still the Lego version of Cartier-Bresson’s “Behind the Gare Saint Lazare”, and the classic 70s poster “tennis girl scratching bum”.

Continuing the theme (photography, not Lego or bums), Maciej Dakowicz is a fantastically talented Polish photographer living in Wales. His Cardiff at night series captures wonderfully the horror of St. Mary’s Street at 2am (and takes me back to when I used to live there - the ‘Valley Commandos’, curry and chips from Caroline Street, vomit, fights and taxi queues). There’s also a video of Maciej shooting on a Saturday night; watching it, I think I’d feel safer taking my camera into a war zone. To be honest, the whole thing’s rather a good advert for banning alcohol and legalising ecstasy.

Sounding from the Estuary is a project that sets out to capture the Thames Estuary, as it’s transformed from marshland into the Thames Gateway Development new town. It features the work of artists Frank Watson, Germander Speedwell and Dave Lawrence, who use ambient sound, spoken word, photographs and video to explore the landscape and history of the area. The exhibition runs from 20th June to 20th July at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre on Southwark Bridge Road in London.

The World Press Photo Awards site has got video interviews with this year’s recipients. It’s a Flash site, so no direct links (when will they learn) - click on View 2008 Interviews, then on the individual photos to hear the photographers talking about the story surrounding their images.

There are no interviews on The Press Photographer’s Year site, just some great photos from the competition that showcases photographs taken for the UK news. You can view a slideshow of this year’s winners.

And finally, Strictly No Photography is a photo-sharing site for pictures taken where you are not allowed to take them. (From past experience in the Houses of Parliament, I recommend putting gaffer tape over any tell-tale red lights on video equipment… Eh, Jon?)

  1. Well it was only the ’standby’ light….. sort of

  2. I believe you’ve got some photos taken in the last couple of months that would be suitable for that Strictly No Photography site, Jon ;)

  3. You might very well think that, but of course, I couldn’t possibly comment

  4. Well you could, but then you’d have to kill me. Possibly with some sort of shoulder-fired projectile device….

  5. Actually I think the convertible torch would be easier to bring round to your place
