After I visited this site at the end of August, I spoke with my mother about Dr Salter and she told me that my father had "gone around" with Dr Salter as a young man - something I had not known and which I confirmed with his young sister. sadly my mother died three weeks later and before I had the chance to visit the statue, but I am so grateful that through this site I had the chance to learn where my father had acquired a set of principles he carried through life. I am so sorry that I never got round to visiting the statue - but I thought I had plenty of time. I do so sympathise with those who knew and loved it.

I'm sad that the sculpture has gone, probably to be melted for scrap value, but also very touched to discover what Dr Salter (and my sculpture of him) meant to people.

Sadly, the Dr Salter's Daydream statue was stolen last Friday night, presumably to be sold for scrap. A very sad day for Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents and all those who admired Dr Salter's legacy.

Just to mention that the Morning Star website made this comment about Dr. Alfred Salter today.

http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/news/content/view/full/110027

The book describes the work of so many in Labour Action for Peace, from its foundation in 1940 by George Lansbury and Doctor Alfred Salter, MP for Bermondsey at the time, through to the present day.

"...through to the present day." That would make him 138 years old and MP for Bermondsey for the last 91 years. Truly an incredible person.

I have just been searching on the internet for the history of Bermondsey and have just discovered this site and the comments of the previous contributors which I have read with great interest. I can tell you that as a child aged 3 my life was saved by this marvellous man. I was suffering from bronchial pneumonia at the time and can remember my mother asking for the doctor to call at our home in Rephidim Street. In 1926 this was a very deprived area illnesses and health problems were common. As far as I can remember when he did call to see me he seemed to be permanantly humming a tune. Anyway, whatever he prescribed worked and am now a reasonably fit octogenerian (88) ! What a wonderful man Dr Salter was and I am very pleased to see that he has now been recognised for the great help he provided for the underpriveledged.

Both my parents lived in Bermonsey before the second world war. I was brought up knowing what a wonderful man he was but thought they were exaggerating a little, as folk sometimes do about their past. It appears not, in fact I think they probably did not know the all of this inspiring man. At 96 I think she is too old for a trek to the statue but will make a point of going very soon to take a photo for her. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

Hi - I was just there yesterday and discovered this amazing man and his story for myself. The walk was also so refreshing to find in the midst of a big city. I love that you've shared and have linked to it in my own account of London the past few days in the hope that others can read about Dr Salter. Hope you don't mind. Thank you for sharing. Blessings

I live on the Millpond Estate just opposite this masterpiece and I have walked past many times and never stopped to see what it was all about or who the man and the little girl was. I am currently studying Politics BA at Greenwich University and am a member of the marxist society there; although I wouldn't say that I am a marxist; more of a socialist. I am also registered at Alfred Salter GP on Drummond road and last week I come across Peter Tatchells book 'The battle for bermondsey' it was then I read about alfred salter and wanted to know and understand more. It is totally amazing how at times we have no understand of where we come from and why things around us are so important. We take them for granted but I must say what a remarkable man and one day when I enter the political realm to represent the people of Bermondsey, this will be the man who will inspire my every move to do good things. Brilliant blog and thanks for sharing it with us. All the best, Sean

I was born in Bermondsey in 1930 and following a near fatal attack of double pneumonia when about three years old went to the solarium for treatment. Similarly my cousin was treated after she had dyphtheria. Have only just discovered Dr. Salter`s story and am looking forward to researching further.
