Peter Taylor – the new Chris Morris?

Every so often I feel moved to send in comments on BBC programmes; sadly I have yet to have one selected for their site, and my comment on Monday’s The New Al-Qaeda was no exception (Update: my comment subsequently appeared on the site). The first part of Peter Taylor’s series was BBC documentary at its [...]

Norton Image Blocking

We had a call from a client the other day regarding the e-commerce site we’re developing for them. They had a query about the page that shows all the top levels of product categories, and the conversation went something like this — Client: Are you going to put product thumbnails for each of the main [...]

Four More Years

I suppose I ought to follow up my previous posts with a comment on the election result. Sadly the Lib Dems didn’t manage to unseat the Labour MP here, so Dulwich residents are going to be suffering from another four years of Irritable Jowell Syndrome. Her majority did go down by about 4,000, mostly in [...]

X marks the spot

Isn’t it amazing how MPs suddenly get interested in their constituents’ views in the weeks before an election? I’ve had several letters, a paper and a questionnaire from my MP Tessa Jowell (archetypal Blairite with allegedly very dodgy husband) in the last month. If only she’d been as keen to hear my thoughts and actually [...]

RIP Civil Rights

RIP habeas corpus. RIP the presumption of innocence. You might however consider whether you should not unfold as a background the great privilege of habeas corpus and trial by jury, which are the supreme protection invented by the English people for ordinary individuals against the state. The power of the Executive to cast a man [...]

Web developers around the world groan

So we’re going to get a new version of IE before Longhorn – IE6 SP3 IE7. To misappropriate a Bill Hicks line, great, now there’s another version of IE I won’t be using. I can just imagine the scenes at Redmond – Steve: Loads of home users are ditching Explorer ‘cos it’s so buggy and [...]

iDilemma

I’m thinking about getting a new Mac, and I also need a laptop. The obvious answer would be to get an Apple laptop I suppose, but I’m distinctly underwhelmed by their offerings. The iBook is over-priced and under-specced: the cheapest model is 700 notes and comes with a 12″ screen and a 30 gig hard [...]

Priorities – killing versus helping

George Monbiot has calculated that the money pledged for the tsunami disaster by the British government is the equivalent of what they spend in five and a half days on the Iraq war. For the US, their donation equates to one and a half days spending on the war.

washed up charidee

As if the earthquake and tsunami hadn’t caused enough suffering already, now Cliff Richard, Boy George and a handful of other has-beens have decided to record a charideee record written by Smashie-turned-failed-musical-producer Mike Read. The song, titled Grief Never Grows Old and described as a melancholy ballad, was written by radio DJ Mike Read. Former [...]

D’oh 4 more years of Dubya

Today’s headline on the front of the Mirror did make me smile. For a moment at least. Greg Palast’s written a piece examining the way votes were counted in Ohio and New Mexico. Disturbing though it may be, it does seem a little futile; after getting away with the farce that was 2000′s election, sadly [...]

The Power of Nightmares

Seems like a good time to remind people to watch the final part of The Power of Nightmares on BBC2 at 9pm tonight. The first part examined the origins of the Islamic fundamentalists and American neo-conservatives, and the second part looked at how they joined forces in Afghanistan. Tonight’s should be particularly interesting/depressing in the [...]

Brainwashed Fundamentalists 1 Rest of World 0

God, you’ve got to feel sorry for the sane Americans who didn’t vote for the chimp. On the bright side, at least I won’t have to find something else to occupy the Random Bushism space here.

Blunkett: enemy of the state

Blunkett really is trying to turn the UK into a police state. His latest proposed changes to the law have just been announced, and include (my initial thoughts in parentheses): Police to be permitted to arrest suspects for any offence. (Such as dropping a cigarette butt on the pavement.) New powers to fingerprint suspects at [...]
